अहं तु राम त्वयि जातकामा चिरं विनाशाय निबद्धभावा ।
मोघं चरित्वा ऽथ तपोव्रतं च त्यक्ष्यामि धिग् जीवितमल्पभाग्या ।
।
॥५-२८-१५॥
Ahaṃ tu Rāma tvayi jātakāmā ciraṃ vināśāya nibaddhabhāvā |
moghaṃ caritvā 'tha tapovrataṃ ca tyakṣyāmi dhig jīvitamalpabhāgyā ॥5-28-15॥
Translation
But I, O Rama, having fallen in love with you and bound my affections to you for so long, have done so only for my own destruction. Having performed austerities and vows in vain, I shall now give up my life. Fie upon the life of my unfortunate self!
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे राम! मैं तो आप में अनुरक्त (प्रेम करने वाली) होकर, अपने विनाश के लिए ही दीर्घकाल तक आप में स्नेह बांधे रही। व्यर्थ ही तप और व्रतों का पालन करके अब मैं प्राण त्याग दूँगी। मुझ अभागिन के जीवन को धिक्कार है!
English Commentary
Sita concludes that her enduring love for Rama has ironically become the agent of her undoing. She feels that binding her soul to him (nibaddhabhāvā) has led only to this tragic end. With the realization that her austerities were in vain, she curses her existence (dhig jīvitam) and resolves to end it. It is the breaking point where the preservation of life feels like a prolongation of torture.
हिंदी टीका
सीता जी निष्कर्ष पर पहुँचती हैं: राम से प्रेम करना ही उनके विनाश का कारण बना ('विनाशाय निबद्धभावा')। यदि वे राम से इतना प्रेम न करतीं, तो शायद वियोग का यह दुख इतना जानलेवा न होता। 'धिग् जीवितम' (जीवन को धिक्कार है) कहकर वे आत्महत्या का अंतिम निर्णय लेती हैं। यह हताशा की पराकाष्ठा है जहाँ प्रेम ही पीड़ा का स्रोत बन गया है।
