सा जीवितं क्षिप्रमहं त्यजेयं विषेण शस्त्रेण शितेन वापि ।
विषस्य दाता नहि मे ऽस्ति कश्चिच्छस्त्रस्य वा वेश्मनि राक्षसस्य ।

॥५-२८-१६॥
Sā jīvitaṃ kṣipramahaṃ tyajeyaṃ viṣeṇa śastreṇa śitena vāpi |
viṣasya dātā nahi me 'sti kaścicchastrasya vā veśmani rākṣasasya ॥5-28-16॥
Translation
I would have ended my life instantly with poison or a sharp weapon, but alas, in this house of the Rakshasa, there is no one to give me poison or a weapon.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मैं विष से अथवा तीखे शस्त्र से अपने प्राण शीघ्र ही त्याग देती, परंतु इस राक्षस (रावण) के घर में मुझे न तो कोई विष देने वाला है और न ही शस्त्र।
English Commentary
The irony of Sita's situation is stark: she is surrounded by deadly demons, yet cannot find a means to kill herself. She longs for poison or a weapon to end her misery quickly (kṣipram), but in Ravana's heavily guarded abode, she is denied even the agency of death. This emphasizes her total lack of control over her circumstances—she is neither free to live with dignity nor free to die.

सीता जी की विवशता देखिये—वे मरना चाहती हैं, पर मरने के साधन भी उपलब्ध नहीं हैं। शत्रु के घर में घिरी होने के बावजूद वे इतनी अकेली हैं कि आत्महत्या के लिए भी उन्हें सहायता नहीं मिल सकती। यह स्थिति उनके 'बंदी' जीवन की क्रूरता को दर्शाती है। वे मृत्यु को मुक्ति मान रही हैं, पर वह मुक्ति भी उनसे दूर है।
