शोकाभितप्ता बहुधा विचिन्त्य सीता ऽथ वेण्युद्ग्रथनं गृहीत्वा ।
उद्बध्य वेण्युद्ग्रथनेन शीघ्रमहं गमिष्यामि यमस्य मूलम् ।

Śokābhitaptā bahudhā vicintya sītā 'tha veṇyudgrathanaṃ gṛhītvā |
udbadhya veṇyudgrathanena śīghramahaṃ gamiṣyāmi yamasya mūlam ॥5-28-18॥
Translation
Tormented by grief and having thought deeply, Sita took hold of her braided hair and thought, "Hanging myself quickly with this braid, I shall go to the abode of Yama."
हिंदी अनुवाद
शोक से जलती हुई सीता ने बहुत विचार करके अपनी लंबी वेणी (चोटी) को पकड़ा और (सोचा) "मैं शीघ्र ही इस वेणी से फांसी लगाकर यमराज के पास जाऊंगी।"
English Commentary
Sita decides on the method of her suicide: strangulation using her own hair. In the tradition of women separated from their husbands, she wore her hair in a single long braid (veṇi). Now, in a tragic turn, she intends to use this symbol of her waiting and austerity as a noose (udbadhya) to hang herself from the tree. It is a desperate improvisation born of necessity.
हिंदी टीका
सीता जी ने मृत्यु का तरीका चुन लिया है। प्रोषितपतिका (जिसका पति दूर हो) स्त्रियाँ एक वेणी (एक चोटी) रखती थीं। सीता जी उसी लंबी वेणी को गले में फंदा बनाकर फांसी लगाने का निर्णय लेती हैं। यह अत्यंत करुण दृश्य है जहाँ उनके सतीत्व का चिन्ह (वेणी) ही उनकी मृत्यु का साधन बनने वाला है। 'यमस्य मूलम्' (यमराज के पास) जाने का अर्थ है मृत्यु को गले लगाना।
