सुखाद्विहीनं बहुदुःखपूर्णमिदं तु नूनं हृदयं स्थिरं मे ।
विशीर्यते यन्न सहस्रधा ऽद्य वज्राहतं शृङ्गमिवाचलस्य ।

Sukhādvihīnaṃ bahuduḥkhapūrṇamidaṃ tu nūnaṃ hṛdayaṃ sthiraṃ me |
viśīryate yanna sahasradhā 'dya vajrāhataṃ śṛṅgamivācalasya ॥5-28-4॥
Translation
Deprived of happiness and filled with immense sorrow, this heart of mine must indeed be hard/steady. For it does not shatter into a thousand pieces today, like a mountain peak struck by a thunderbolt.
हिंदी अनुवाद
सुख से रहित और बहुत से दुखों से भरा हुआ मेरा यह हृदय निश्चय ही (पत्थर सा) कठोर है, जो आज वज्र से मारे गए पर्वत के शिखर की भांति हजारों टुकड़ों में नहीं फट रहा है।
English Commentary
Sita questions the resilience of her own heart. She employs a powerful simile, comparing the emotional blow she has received to a thunderbolt (vajra) striking a mountain peak. Logically, her heart should have shattered into "a thousand pieces," but it remains intact. She interprets this physical resilience as a cruelty of fate or a hardness in her own nature, rather than strength. It poignantly illustrates the psychological state where a victim wonders how their body can continue to function when their spirit is completely crushed.

सीता जी अपने हृदय की सहनशक्ति को कोस रही हैं। वे मानती हैं कि रावण के वचन और राम के वियोग का आघात 'वज्र' के समान है। यदि उनका हृदय कोमल होता, तो अब तक फट गया होता। 'हृदयं स्थिरं' (कठोर/स्थिर हृदय) कहना एक विडंबना है—वे अपनी जीवित रहने की क्षमता को अपनी निष्ठुरता मान रही हैं। यह श्लोक प्रेम की उस अवस्था को दर्शाता है जहाँ प्रेमी वियोग में प्राण धारण करने को भी अपराध मानता है। उपमा अलंकार का सुंदर प्रयोग यहाँ पर्वत और वज्र के माध्यम से किया गया है।
