नैवास्ति दोषं मम नूनमत्र वध्या ऽहमस्याप्रियदर्शनस्य ।
भावं न चास्याहमनुप्रदातुमलं द्विजो मन्त्रमिवाद्विजाय ।

Naivāsti doṣaṃ mama nūnamatra vadhyā 'hamasyāpriyadarśanasya |
bhāvaṃ na cāsyāhamanuradātumalaṃ dvijo mantramivādvijāya ॥5-28-5॥
Translation
Truly, there is no fault of mine in this matter, even if I am to be killed by this hideous one. I am simply unable to offer my heart/affection to him, just as a Dvija (twice-born) cannot impart a sacred Veda mantra to one who is not a Dvija.
हिंदी अनुवाद
इसमें मेरा कोई दोष नहीं है कि मैं इस कुरूप (रावण) के द्वारा वध किए जाने योग्य हूँ; (क्योंकि) जैसे एक द्विज (ब्राह्मण) वेद-मंत्र अभक्त (अद्विज) को नहीं दे सकता, वैसे ही मैं अपना भाव (प्रेम/हृदय) इसे नहीं दे सकती।
English Commentary
This verse defines Sita's unwavering resolve and moral integrity. She asserts that her refusal to submit to Ravana is not stubbornness, but a matter of spiritual law (Dharma). Using a potent cultural metaphor, she equates her love to a sacred Mantra and herself to a Dvija (custodian of the sacred). Just as forbidden knowledge cannot be imparted to the uninitiated or unworthy, her devotion cannot be transferred to Ravana. It frames her resistance not just as personal rejection, but as the protection of something divinely sacred.

यह श्लोक सीता जी के चरित्र की रीढ़ है। मृत्यु के भय के बावजूद, वे धर्म और पातिव्रत्य पर अडिग हैं। उन्होंने बहुत ही सशक्त धार्मिक उपमा का प्रयोग किया है: जैसे वेद मंत्र का अधिकारी केवल सुपात्र (द्विज) होता है और कुपात्र को वह नहीं दिया जा सकता, वैसे ही उनका प्रेम केवल राम (सुपात्र) के लिए है। रावण (कुपात्र) को प्रेम देना उनके लिए धर्म के विरुद्ध है। यह दर्शाता है कि उनका प्रेम केवल भावना नहीं, बल्कि एक 'दीक्षा' और 'तपस्या' है जिसकी पवित्रता वे प्राण देकर भी सुरक्षित रखेंगी।
