Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
वस्वोकसारा प्रतिमाम् समीक्ष्य नगरीम् ततः ।
खम् इव उत्पतिताम् लन्काम् जहर्ष हनुमान् कपिः ॥५-३-१२॥
vasvokasārā pratimām samīkṣya nagarīm tataḥ |
kham iva utpatitām lankām jaharṣa hanumān kapiḥ ॥5-3-12॥
Translation
Observing that city of Lanka, which resembled Vasvokasara (the city of Indra/Kubera) and seemed to be leaping into the sky, the monkey Hanuman rejoiced.

इन्द्र की नगरी 'वस्वोकसारा' (अमरावती या अलकापुरी) के समान और आकाश में उछलती हुई सी उस लंका नगरी को देखकर वानर वीर हनुमान जी हर्षित हुए।
English Commentary
The comparison to 'Vasvokasara' places Lanka on par with divine cities, reiterating that Ravana's power rivals that of the gods. Hanuman's reaction—'jaharsha' (rejoiced)—is pivotal. It is not the joy of attachment but the joy of a mission proceeding as planned. Despite the daunting fortifications described in previous verses, his spirit remains high. The phrase 'kham iva utpatitam' (leaping into the sky) is repeated, perhaps reflecting Hanuman's own affinity for the sky as the son of the Wind God; he sees a city that matches his own aerial nature.

'वस्वोकसारा' का अर्थ सामान्यतः कुबेर की नगरी अलकापुरी या इंद्र की अमरावती से लिया जाता है। चूँकि रावण ने कुबेर से ही लंका और पुष्पक विमान छीना था, यह तुलना अत्यंत सटीक है। हनुमान जी का 'हर्ष' (प्रसन्नता) यहाँ एक योद्धा का हर्ष है जो एक योग्य और चुनौतीपूर्ण लक्ष्य को सामने देखता है। यह एक अन्वेषक की संतोषीता है जो लंबी यात्रा के बाद अद्भुत खोज करता है। वे लंका की सुंदरता से मोहित नहीं हैं, बल्कि अपने मिशन के अगले चरण—सीता की खोज—के लिए उत्साहित हैं।
