न इयम् अन्येन नगरी शक्या धर्षयितुम् बलात् ।
रक्षिता रावण बलैः उद्यत आयुध धारिभिः ॥५-३-१४॥
na iyam anyena nagarī śakyā dharṣayitum balāt |
rakṣitā rāvaṇa balaiḥ udyata āyudha dhāribhiḥ ॥5-3-14॥
Translation
(He thought) This city, guarded by Ravana's forces bearing raised weapons, cannot be conquered by force by anyone else.

(उन्होंने सोचा) उद्यत (तैयार) अस्त्र-शस्त्र धारण करने वाले रावण के सैनिकों द्वारा सुरक्षित इस नगरी को किसी अन्य के लिए बलपूर्वक जीतना (घर्षित करना) संभव नहीं है।
English Commentary
Here, Hanuman performs a threat assessment. He concludes that a frontal assault ('balat') by ordinary means is futile. The phrase 'udyata ayudha' (uplifted weapons) signifies perpetual readiness; the garrison is not sleeping. This realization is crucial for the war strategy Rama will later adopt. Hanuman understands that numbers alone won't suffice against such fortified technology and discipline; it will require supernatural valour. This sets the stage for him to mentally list the few who can breach these walls.

हनुमान जी एक यथार्थवादी कमांडर हैं। वे स्वीकार करते हैं कि सामान्य सेना या योद्धाओं के लिए लंका अभेद्य है। 'उद्यत आयुध' (उठाए हुए हथियार) दर्शाता है कि रावण की सेना सुस्त नहीं है, वे 'हाई अलर्ट' पर हैं। 'न अन्येन... शक्या' (दूसरों द्वारा संभव नहीं) का विचार करके वे अपनी सेना (वानर सेना) की क्षमताओं और सीमाओं को तौल रहे हैं। यह निराशावाद नहीं, अपितु व्यावहारिक समीक्षा है। वे जानते हैं कि यहाँ केवल विशिष्ट योद्धा ही प्रभाव डाल सकते हैं।
