सा तम् हरिवरम् दृष्ट्वा लङ्का रावणपालिता ।
स्वयमेवोत्थिता तत्र विकृताननदर्शना ॥५-३-२१॥
sā tam harivaram dṛṣṭvā laṅkā rāvaṇapālitā |
svayamevotthitā tatra vikṛtānanadarśanā ॥5-3-21॥
Translation
Seeing that best of monkeys, Lanka (the guardian deity of the city), protected by Ravana, rose up there of her own accord, possessing a deformed and terrifying face.
हिंदी अनुवाद
रावण द्वारा पालित वह लंका (पुरी की अधिष्ठात्री देवी), उस वानरश्रेष्ठ (हनुमान) को देखकर स्वयं ही वहां उठ खड़ी हुई। उसका मुख विकृत (डरावना) दिखाई देता था।
English Commentary
The city manifests as a sentient being. Her description as 'vikrita-anana-darshana' (having a deformed face) reflects the moral corruption within; the external beauty of the architecture described earlier masks an ugly internal spirit. The phrase 'svayameva utthita' (rose up by herself) implies that the supernatural defense mechanism of Lanka is automatic. She identifies Hanuman not just as an intruder, but as a threat to the existence of the Rakshasa order.

यहाँ लंका की अधिष्ठात्री देवी का भौतिक प्रकटीकरण होता है। रावण के पाप और अधर्म के प्रभाव से उस नगरी का 'तेज' विकृत हो चुका है, इसलिए उसका स्वरूप 'विकृताननदर्शना' (डरावने मुख वाली) है। 'स्वयमेवोत्थिता' (स्वयं ही उठ खड़ी हुई) वाक्यांश दर्शाता है कि यद्यपि रक्षक सो रहे हो सकते हैं, लेकिन नगर की आत्मा जाग्रत है और वह शत्रु को पहचान लेती है। यह बाधा भौतिक नहीं, बल्कि दैवीय और आध्यात्मिक है।
