कस्त्वम् केन च कार्येण इह प्राप्तो वनालय ।
कथय स्वेह यत्तत्त्वम् यावत्प्राणा धरन्ति ते ॥५-३-२३॥
kastvam kena ca kāryeṇa iha prāpto vanālaya |
kathaya sveha yattattvam yāvatprāṇā dharanti te ॥5-3-23॥
Translation
"Who are you, and for what purpose have you come here, O forest-dweller? Tell the truth here while your life-breaths still hold."

"हे वनवासी (वनालय)! तुम कौन हो और किस कार्य से यहाँ आये हो? जब तक तुम्हारे प्राण शरीर में टिके हैं, तब तक यहाँ सच-सच बता दो।"
English Commentary
The interrogation is aggressive and condescending. Calling Hanuman 'vanalaya' (forest-dweller) highlights the clash between the urban pride of Lanka and the natural simplicity of the Vanara. The ultimatum—"tell the truth while you are still alive"—reveals her murderous intent. She assumes immediate superiority, characteristic of the arrogance that permeates Ravana's kingdom.

लंकिनी का स्वर अत्यंत आक्रामक है। वह हनुमान जी को 'वनालय' (वन में रहने वाला) कहकर तिरस्कृत करती है, यह जताते हुए कि एक सभ्य स्वर्ण नगरी में जंगली वानर का क्या काम? 'यावत्प्राणा धरन्ति ते' (जब तक प्राण हैं) एक स्पष्ट मृत्यु की धमकी है। उसका तात्पर्य है कि यदि सत्य नहीं बताया तो मृत्यु निश्चित है। यह राक्षसी अहंकार का परिचायक है जो सामने वाले के बल को जाने बिना उसे तुच्छ समझता है।
