का त्वम् विरूपनयना पुरद्वारेऽवतिष्ठसि ।
किमर्थम् चापि माम् रुद्ध्वा निर्भर्त्सयसि दारुणा ॥५-३-२६॥
kā tvam virūpanayanā puradvāre'vatiṣṭhasi |
kimartham cāpi mām ruddhvā nirbhartsayasi dāruṇā ॥5-3-26॥
Translation
"But who are you, with ugly eyes, standing at the city gate? And why do you obstruct me and scold me so cruelly?"
हिंदी अनुवाद
"(परन्तु पहले यह बताओ कि) तुम विकृत नेत्रों वाली कौन हो जो नगर के द्वार पर खड़ी हो? और तुम क्यों मुझे रोककर इस प्रकार दारुण (कठोर) डांट-फटकार रही हो?"
English Commentary
Hanuman turns the tables. Before answering her, he demands her identity. Addressing her as 'Virupanayana' (ugly-eyed) is not an insult but a descriptive observation of her terrifying form. He questions her authority to block and scold ('nirbhartsayasi') him. This shows Hanuman's presence of mind; he is assessing the nature of the obstacle—whether it is physical or supernatural—before deciding his course of action.

उत्तर देने से पहले हनुमान जी प्रतिप्रश्न (Counter-question) करते हैं। यह एक चतुर रणनीति है। वे जानना चाहते हैं कि उनका सामना किससे है—क्या यह कोई साधारण राक्षसी है या कोई विशेष शक्ति? वे उसे 'विरूपनयना' (कुरूप आँखों वाली) कहते हैं, जो उसकी वास्तविकता का दर्पण है। वे पूछते हैं कि उसे किस अधिकार से उन्हें रोकने और डांटने का हक़ है। यह दर्शाता है कि हनुमान जी किसी के भी अन्यायपूर्ण दबाव को स्वीकार नहीं करते।
