स ताम् स्त्रीरूपविकृताम् दृष्ट्वा वानरपुङ्गवः ।
आबभाषेऽथ मेधावि सत्त्वान् प्लवगर्षभः ॥५-३-३२॥
sa tām strīrūpavikṛtām dṛṣṭvā vānarapuṅgavaḥ |
ābabhāṣe'tha medhāvi sattvān plavagarṣabhaḥ ॥5-3-32॥
Translation
Seeing her deformed in the guise of a woman, that bull among monkeys, the intelligent one, spoke to her, relying on his inner strength.
हिंदी अनुवाद
स्त्री रूप में उस विकृत (राक्षसी) को देखकर, बुद्धिमान (मेधावी) और वानरों में श्रेष्ठ (प्लवगर्षभ) हनुमान ने अपने बल (सत्व) का आश्रय लेकर उससे कहा।
English Commentary
Hanuman faces a moral dilemma. His opponent is female ('stri'), but she is a monstrous threat ('vikrita'). Valmiki calls him 'Medhavi' (intelligent/wise) here because he must navigate the rules of engagement carefully. He cannot kill a woman (Dharma), but he must enter the city (Duty). Relying on 'Sattva' (essence/strength/courage), he addresses her. This prepares the reader for his calculated use of force in the subsequent verses—enough to subdue, but not to kill.

हनुमान जी धर्मसंकट में हैं क्योंकि शत्रु एक 'स्त्री' है। क्षत्रिय धर्म के अनुसार स्त्री पर हाथ उठाना वर्जित है। परन्तु वह 'स्त्रीरूपविकृताम्' (विकृत स्त्री) है और प्राणघातक बाधा है। इसलिए हनुमान जी को 'मेधावी' (बुद्धिमान) कहा गया है—वे धर्म और कर्तव्य के बीच संतुलन साधेंगे। वे 'सत्व' (बल और बुद्धि) का आश्रय लेकर, अर्थात बिना क्रोध के और नियंत्रण में रहकर, उसे उत्तर देते हैं। वे उसे नष्ट नहीं करना चाहते, केवल परास्त करना चाहते हैं।
