द्रक्ष्यामि नगरीम् लङ्काम् साट्टप्राकारतोरणाम् ।
इत्यर्थमिह सम्प्राप्तः परम् कौतूहलम् हि मे ॥ ॥५-३-३३॥
drakṣyāmi nagarīm laṅkām sāṭṭaprākāratoraṇām |
ityarthamiha samprāptaḥ param kautūhalam hi me ॥5-3-33॥
Translation
"I intend to view the city of Lanka with its mansions, defensive walls, and archways. It is for this purpose alone that I have arrived here, for I possess a great curiosity regarding it."
हिंदी अनुवाद
मैं अट्टालिकाओं, प्राचीरों (दीवारों) और तोरणद्वारों से युक्त इस लंका नगरी को देखूंगा। इसी उद्देश्य से मैं यहाँ आया हूँ, क्योंकि मेरे मन में (इसे देखने का) अत्यंत कौतूहल है।
English Commentary
Here, Hanuman employs diplomatic tact. Instead of responding to the challenge with immediate aggression, he simply states his intent as curiosity. By describing the city's architecture—mansions, walls, and arches—he frames his visit as that of an admiring traveler rather than an infiltrator or spy. The use of the word kautūhalam (curiosity) is strategic; he aims to disarm the guardian's suspicion by appearing harmless. This highlights Hanuman’s intelligence; despite his immense strength, he prioritizes conflict avoidance through Sama (conciliation) before resorting to force.

हनुमान जी यहाँ कूटनीति और सत्य का मिश्रण प्रयोग कर रहे हैं। लंकिनी द्वारा रोके जाने पर वे उग्र होने के बजाय सरलता से अपना उद्देश्य बताते हैं। वे कहते हैं कि वे केवल एक पर्यटक की भांति इस महान नगरी के शिल्प, अट्टालिकाओं और द्वारों को देखना चाहते हैं। 'कौतूहल' शब्द का प्रयोग करके वे यह जताना चाहते हैं कि उनका कोई शत्रुतापूर्ण प्रयोजन नहीं है। यह हनुमान जी की बुद्धिमत्ता (प्रज्ञा) को दर्शाता है कि वे अनावश्यक संघर्ष से बचने के लिए पहले 'साम' (अनुरोध/शांति) नीति का प्रयोग करते हैं, भले ही वे अत्यंत शक्तिशाली हैं।
