ततः सम्वर्तयामास वामहस्तस्य सोऽङ्गुलीः ।
मुष्टिनाभिजघानैनाम् हनुमान् क्रोधमूर्चितः ॥ ॥५-३-४०॥
tataḥ samvartayāmāsa vāmahastasya so'ṅgulīḥ |
muṣṭinābhijaghānainām hanumān krodhamūrcitaḥ ॥5-3-40॥
Translation
Then, overwhelmed with anger, Hanuman folded the fingers of his left hand into a fist and struck her.

तदनंतर क्रोध से भरे हुए हनुमान जी ने अपने बाएं हाथ की अंगुलियों को मोड़ा और एक मुक्का उस (लंकिनी) को मारा।
English Commentary
This verse contains a critical detail regarding Hanuman’s ethics. He strikes her with his left fist (vāmahastasya). In martial tradition, the left hand is often considered the weaker or dismissive hand. By using it, Hanuman ensures he punishes her insolence without delivering a fatal blow, acknowledging her gender while neutralizing the threat. Even though he was krodhamūrcitaḥ (filled with anger), his judgment remained intact, proving his mastery over his impulses even in the heat of battle.

इस श्लोक में एक बहुत सूक्ष्म और महत्वपूर्ण विवरण है—'वामहस्तस्य' (बाएँ हाथ का)। हनुमान जी ने लंकिनी को बाएं हाथ से मारा। शास्त्रों में स्त्री पर प्रहार करना वर्जित है, और यदि आवश्यक हो तो कम बल प्रयोग करना चाहिए। बाएं हाथ का प्रयोग यह दर्शाता है कि वे उसे शत्रु मानते हुए भी 'स्त्री' होने का सम्मान दे रहे हैं और पूरी ताकत नहीं लगा रहे। 'क्रोधमूर्चितः' (क्रोध से भरकर) होते हुए भी उनका विवेक जागृत है। यह एक वीर पुरुष का लक्षण है।
