स्त्री चेति मन्यमानेन नातिक्रोधः स्वयम् कृतः ।
सा तु तेन प्रहारेण विह्वलाङ्गी निशाचरी ॥ ॥५-३-४१॥
strī ceti manyamānena nātikrodhaḥ svayam kṛtaḥ |
sā tu tena prahāreṇa vihvalāṅgī niśācarī ॥5-3-41॥
Translation
Thinking "She is a woman," he did not unleash his full anger voluntarily. Yet, by that single blow, the demoness's limbs became overwhelmed and unsteady.

'यह स्त्री है' ऐसा मानकर उन्होंने स्वयं अधिक क्रोध (या बल प्रयोग) नहीं किया। तो भी उस प्रहार से उस निशाचरी के अंग विह्वल (व्याकुल/शिथिल) हो गए।
English Commentary
The narrator explicitly states Hanuman's internal thought process: he restrained his anger solely because his opponent was a woman. This adherence to the warrior code (Dharma) highlights his nobility. However, the verse also underscores his immense strength; even a restrained, left-handed blow was enough to incapacitate the guardian deity of Lanka, leaving her vihvalāṅgī (with agitated/unsteady limbs). It illustrates that even a fraction of divine strength is superior to the full force of unrighteous power.
हिंदी टीका
वाल्मीकि जी स्पष्ट करते हैं कि हनुमान जी ने जानबूझकर अपनी शक्ति को सीमित रखा (नातिक्रोधः स्वयम् कृतः)। यह धर्म का पालन है। किन्तु हनुमान जी का साधारण प्रहार भी इतना शक्तिशाली था कि लंकिनी, जो पूरी लंका की संरक्षिका थी, 'विह्वलाङ्गी' हो गई—अर्थात् उसके शरीर का नियंत्रण छूट गया। यह प्रसंग बताता है कि भगवान के भक्तों का संयमित बल भी आसुरी शक्तियों के पूर्ण बल से कहीं अधिक होता है।
