Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
विस्मय आविष्ट हृदयः पुरीम् आलोक्य सर्वतः ।
जाम्बूनदमयैः द्वारैः वैदूर्य कृत वेदिकैः ॥५-३-८॥
vismaya āviṣṭa hṛdayaḥ purīm ālokya sarvataḥ |
jāmbūnadamayaiḥ dvāraiḥ vaidūrya kṛta vedikaiḥ ॥5-3-8॥
Translation
Looking at the city in all directions, his heart was filled with wonder. The gates were made of gold, and the platforms/floors were inlaid with lapis lazuli (cat's eye gems).
हिंदी अनुवाद
सब ओर उस पुरी को देखकर उनका हृदय विस्मय (आश्चर्य) से भर गया। वहां के द्वार स्वर्ण (जाम्बूनद) के बने थे और उनकी वेदियाँ (चबूतरे/फर्श) वैदूर्य मणियों से जड़ी थीं।
English Commentary
Even a divine being is struck with 'vismaya' (awe). The specificity of materials—'Jambunada' gold and 'Vaidurya' (lapis/cat's eye)—grounds the fantasy in tangible wealth. This verse cements the image of Lanka as the City of Gold. It contrasts the asceticism of Rama with the hedonism of Ravana. Hanuman's wonder is not admiration for Ravana, but an objective appreciation of the craftsmanship and scale of the city he is about to burn.

लंका के वैभव को निकट से देखकर हनुमान जी का चकित होना स्वाभाविक है। 'विस्मय आविष्ट' (विस्मय से भरा हुआ) होना दर्शाता है कि रावण का ऐश्वर्य कल्पनातीत था। 'वैदूर्य' मणियों का प्रयोग फर्श या वेदियों में करना उस विलासिता का सूचक है जिसका उपभोग राक्षस कर रहे थे। महर्षि वाल्मीकि यह स्थापित कर रहे हैं कि भौतिक समृद्धि में लंका अयोध्या या किष्किन्धा से कहीं आगे थी, परन्तु धर्म के अभाव में यह सब विनाश के कगार पर था।
