Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
मैथिली चिन्तयामास विस्मयं परमं गता ।
अहो भीममिदं रूपं वानरस्य दुरासदम् ।
दुर्निरीक्ष्यमिति ज्ञात्वा पुनरेव मुमोह सा ।

॥५-३२-३॥
Maithilī cintayāmāsa vismayaṃ paramaṃ gatā । Aho bhīmamidaṃ rūpaṃ vānarasya durāsadam । Durnirīkṣyamiti jñātvā punareva mumoha sā । । ॥5-32-3॥
Translation
Filled with extreme amazement, Maithili (Sita) thought, "Ah! The form of this monkey is terrible and unassailable. It is difficult even to gaze at him." Realizing this, she became confused and overwhelmed with fear once again.
हिंदी अनुवाद
परम विस्मय को प्राप्त हुई मैथिली (सीता) ने विचार किया—"अहो! इस वानर का यह रूप भयानक और दुर्धर्ष (जिसका सामना करना कठिन हो) है। इसकी ओर देखना भी कठिन है"—ऐसा जानकर वे पुनः मोहित (मूर्छित/भयभीत) हो गईं।
English Commentary
This verse captures the initial shock Sita experiences upon spotting Hanuman. Despite Hanuman's humble approach, his natural form as a Vanara (monkey) appears 'Bhima' (terrible) and 'Durasadam' (difficult to approach) to her in this context. Surrounded by hostile demons, any strange creature is perceived as a potential threat or a shapeshifting Rakshasa. Her reaction of fainting or becoming "deluded" (Mumoha) highlights her fragile physical and emotional state. She oscillates between reality and the fear that this is yet another illusion created by Ravana to torment her, illustrating the psychological torture she has endured.

यहाँ सीता जी की मनःस्थिति का चित्रण है। अशोक वाटिका में राक्षसियों के बीच घिरी सीता ने जब अचानक वृक्ष पर एक वानर को देखा, तो उनका प्रथम भाव विस्मय और भय का था। यद्यपि हनुमान जी विनीत भाव में थे, किन्तु एक साधारण वानर का रूप भी राजपुत्री सीता के लिए 'भीम' (भयानक) था। लंका में किसी भी बाहरी प्राणी का दिखना खतरे का संकेत था। सीता जी का 'पुनः मोहित' होना यह दर्शाता है कि वे निरंतर भय और आशा के द्वंद्व में जी रही थीं। उन्हें लगा कि यह राक्षसों की कोई नई माया है जो उन्हें डराने या छलने के लिए रची गई है।
