रुरोद बहुधा सीता मन्दं मन्दस्वरा सती ।
॥५-३२-५॥
Ruroda bahudhā Sītā mandaṃ mandasvarā satī । ॥5-32-5॥
Translation
The virtuous Sita cried in various ways, weeping softly in a low voice.

वह सती सीता मन्द स्वर में (धीमे-धीमे) अनेक प्रकार से रोने लगीं।
English Commentary
The phrasing "Manda-svara" (low voice) is poignant. Sita cannot afford to weep loudly for fear of alerting the sleeping Rakshasis guarding her. This suppression of grief adds weight to her suffering; she is denied even the catharsis of a loud cry. Weeping "Bahudha" (in various ways) suggests a flood of memories—her happy past, the injustice of exile, and the trauma of abduction—washing over her simultaneously. It portrays the intense internal pressure she is under, forced to mourn silently in the midst of enemies, maintaining her dignity even in despair.

सीता जी का 'मन्द स्वर' (धीमे स्वर) में रोना उनकी परिस्थिति की गंभीरता को दिखाता है। वे क्रूर राक्षसियों से घिरी हुई हैं; यदि वे जोर से रोतीं, तो राक्षसियां जाग जातीं और उपद्रव करतीं। इसलिए, उनका दुःख भीतर ही भीतर घुट रहा है। 'बहुधा' (अनेक प्रकार से) रोने का अर्थ है कि उन्हें अपने अतीत, अयोध्या, वनवास, और अपहरण की विभिन्न घटनाएं याद आ रही हैं। एक 'सती' (पतिव्रता) होने के नाते, पराये देश में अपनी मर्यादा और सुरक्षा का ध्यान रखते हुए, वे अपने आवेगों को नियंत्रित कर रही हैं, जो उनके संयम का परिचायक है।
