सा तं दृष्ट्वा हरिश्रेष्ठं विनीतवदुपस्थितम् ।
मैथिली चिन्तयामास स्वप्नो ऽयमिति भामिनी ।

Sā taṃ dṛṣṭvā hariśreṣṭhaṃ vinītavadupasthitam । Maithilī cintayāmāsa svapno 'yamiti bhāminī । । ॥5-32-6॥
Translation
Seeing that foremost of monkeys standing there in a humble posture, Maithili thought to herself, "This must be a dream."

वानरश्रेष्ठ हनुमान को विनीत भाव से उपस्थित देखकर, मैथिली (सीता) ने सोचा—"यह (निश्यय ही) कोई स्वप्न है।"
English Commentary
Faced with the incongruity of a humble, civilized monkey inside the impregnable fortress of Lanka, Sita’s mind seeks a rational explanation and settles on the idea of a dream ("Swapno 'yam"). The adjective 'Vinita-vat' (like a humble person) describes Hanuman's demeanor. He is trying to be non-threatening, but the very existence of a benevolent figure in her hellish reality seems impossible to her. This highlights the psychological barrier Hanuman must bridge: he has to convince a traumatized captive that help has actually, physically arrived.

हनुमान जी का व्यवहार वानरों जैसा चंचल या उग्र नहीं, बल्कि अत्यंत 'विनीत' (नम्र) था। लंका जैसी असुर-पुरी में एक वानर का इतना सौम्य और सभ्य होना सीता जी की समझ से परे था। जब वास्तविकता तर्क से परे हो जाए, तो मन उसे 'स्वप्न' मान लेता है। सीता जी को लगा कि जागृत अवस्था में ऐसा होना असंभव है कि कोई राम-दूत यहाँ तक आ सके। यह श्लोक हनुमान जी की बुद्धिमत्ता को भी दिखाता है—उन्होंने सीता जी को डराने से बचने के लिए जानबूझकर विनीत वेश धारण किया था, फिर भी सीता उसे सत्य स्वीकार नहीं कर पा रही थीं।
