सा वीक्षमाणा पृथुभुग्नवक्त्रं शाखामृगेन्द्रस्य यथोक्तकारम् ।
ददर्श पिङ्गधिपतेरमात्यं वातात्मजं बुद्धिमतां वरिष्ठम् ।

॥५-३२-७॥
Sā vīkṣamāṇā pṛthubhugnavaktraṃ śākhāmṛgendrasya yathoktakāram । Dadarśa piṅgadhipateramātyaṃ vātātmajaṃ buddhimatāṃ variṣṭham । । ॥5-32-7॥
Translation
She gazed at the son of the Wind-god, the minister of the Monkey King, the foremost among the wise, who acts according to the commands of Sugriva, and whose face was broad and slightly curved.

उन्होंने वानरराज सुग्रीव का यथोचित कार्य करने वाले, वानराधिपति के मंत्री, बुद्धिमानों में श्रेष्ठ वायुपुत्र को देखा, जिनका मुख बड़ा और कुछ टेढ़ा था।
English Commentary
This verse provides a vivid description of Hanuman through the narrator's voice, though Sita sees only the physical form. She observes his "broad, flat face" typical of a Vanara. However, the text layers this with epithets Sita is yet to discover: he is the "foremost among the wise" and the "Minister of Sugriva." The phrase "Yathoktakaram" (one who does exactly as ordered) defines Hanuman's loyalty and competence as a messenger. Sita is physically looking at her savior, but her mind is struggling to process the visual data of a monkey acting with the gravitas of a minister.

यहाँ वाल्मीकि जी ने हनुमान जी के स्वरूप और गुणों का वर्णन किया है। सीता जी उन्हें देख रही हैं, लेकिन अभी पहचानती नहीं हैं। 'बुद्धिमानों में वरिष्ठ' विशेषण यहाँ महत्त्वपूर्ण है क्योंकि हनुमान जी ने सीता के सामने आने के लिए अत्यंत चतुराई से समय और विधि का चयन किया था। 'पृथुभुग्नवक्त्रं' (चौड़ा और टेढ़ा मुख) वानर के शारीरिक लक्षणों का यथार्थवादी वर्णन है। सीता एक ऐसे प्राणी को देख रही हैं जो देखने में पशुवत है, किन्तु जिसका आभाामंडल और विनय किसी ज्ञानी मंत्री जैसा है। यह विरोधाभास उनके संदेह को और गहरा करता है।
