रावणेन जनस्थानाद् बलादपहृता यदि ।
सीता त्वमसि भद्रं ते तन्ममाचक्ष्व पृच्छतः ।
।
॥५-३३-१३॥
Rāvaṇena janasthānād balādapahṛtā yadi |
Sītā tvamasi bhadraṃ te tanmamācakṣva pṛcchataḥ ॥5-33-13॥
Translation
If you are that Sita who was forcibly abducted by Ravana from Janasthana, may good betide you; please tell me, as I ask you.
हिंदी अनुवाद
यदि आप वही सीता हैं जिनका रावण ने जनस्थान से बलपूर्वक हरण किया था, तो आपका कल्याण हो, मुझ पूछने वाले को यह बताइये।
English Commentary
Hanuman initiates the conversation with extreme etiquette and caution. Although he has practically identified Sita through observation, he seeks verbal confirmation rather than jumping to conclusions. The phrase 'bhadram te' (may good happen to you) is used to convey his benevolent intent and alleviate any fear she might have of him being a demon in disguise. By mentioning 'Janasthana' and the abduction, he signals that he is aware of her history. This verse highlights the maturity of a perfect messenger (duta) who establishes a foundation of trust before delivering the core message. He invites her to speak her truth.

हनुमान जी यहाँ अत्यंत शिष्टाचार और सावधानी के साथ वार्तालाप आरम्भ करते हैं। यद्यपि उन्होंने सीता जी को पहचान लिया है, फिर भी वे सीधे निष्कर्ष पर कूदने के बजाय उनसे पुष्टि चाहते हैं। 'भद्रं ते' (आपका कल्याण हो) का प्रयोग करके वे अपनी शुभ मंशा प्रकट करते हैं, ताकि सीता जी को भय न हो। 'जनस्थान' का उल्लेख यह सिद्ध करता है कि हनुमान जी को पिछली घटनाओं का पूरा ज्ञान है। यह श्लोक एक दूत की परिपक्वता को दर्शाता है जो शत्रु के क्षेत्र में किसी भी प्रकार की त्रुटि नहीं करना चाहता। वह चाहते हैं कि सीता स्वयं अपनी पहचान बताएं ताकि विश्वास का सम्बन्ध स्थापित हो सके।
