यत्तदुक्तं त्वया वाक्यं प्रीत्या नृपतिसत्तम ।
तच्चेन्न वितथं कार्यं वनं गच्छतु राघवः ।
।
॥५-३३-२२॥
Yattaduktaṃ tvayā vākyaṃ prītyā nṛpatisattama |
Taccenna vitathaṃ kāryaṃ vanaṃ gacchatu rāghavaḥ ॥5-33-22॥
Translation
O best of kings, if that pledge which was given by you to me out of love is not to be rendered false, then let Raghava go to the forest.

हे नृपश्रेष्ठ! जो वह वचन आपने प्रेमवश मुझसे कहा था, यदि उसे झूठा नहीं करना है, तो राघव वन को जायें।
English Commentary
This verse encapsulates the moral dilemma. Kaikeyi binds King Dasharatha to his past promises (boons granted during the Devasura war). She challenges the King's integrity, addressing him as nṛpatisattama (best of kings) ironically, implying he ceases to be the best if he breaks his word. She leverages the King's adherence to truth (satya) to enforce a cruel demand: Rama's exile. It highlights how the virtue of truthfulness was manipulated to serve a personal agenda, forcing the King into a corner where saving his honor meant losing his son.
हिंदी टीका
इस श्लोक में धर्मसंकट का मूल है। कैकेयी राजा दशरथ को उनके सत्य और प्रतिज्ञा की याद दिलाती हैं। देवासुर संग्राम के समय दशरथ ने जो वरदान दिए थे, उन्हें यहाँ 'प्रीत्या' (प्रेमवश) दिए गए वचन के रूप में उद्धृत किया गया है। कैकेयी तर्क देती हैं कि रघुकुल की रीत 'सत्य' है, और यदि राजा अपनी बात से मुकरे तो वह 'वितथं' (असत्य/व्यर्थ) हो जाएगा। अत: राम को वन जाना ही होगा। यहाँ प्रेम और कर्तव्य के बीच, सत्य के नाम पर कठोरता का आश्रय लिया गया है।
