Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
सा ऽहं तस्याग्रतस्तूर्णं प्रस्थिता वनचारिणी ।
न हि मे तेन हीनाया वासः स्वर्गे ऽपि रोचते ।
॥५-३३-२८॥
Sā 'haṃ tasyāgratastūrṇaṃ prasthitā vanacāriṇī । Na hi me tena hīnāyā vāsaḥ svarge 'pi rocate । ॥5-33-28॥
Translation
I, destinated to be a forest-dweller, quickly set out ahead of him. Indeed, separated from him, even living in Heaven does not please me.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(उनके रोकने पर भी) मैं वन में विचरण करने के लिए शीघ्रता से उनके आगे चल पड़ी। क्योंकि उनके बिना मुझे स्वर्ग में रहना भी अच्छा नहीं लगता।
English Commentary
Sita expresses her fierce independence regarding her devotion. Despite Rama’s initial instructions to stay back, she asserts her will by walking ahead of him (agratah) into the forest. This action symbolizes her desire to clear the path of thorns for him or to face dangers first. The comparison to Heaven is poignant: paradise is defined not by location or comfort, but by Rama's presence. Without him, the luxury of Heaven is undesirable to her. This defines her identity not just as a follower, but as an inseparable partner in his destiny.

यह श्लोक माता सीता के "पातिव्रत्य" और प्रेम की पराकाष्ठा है। "तस्य अग्रतः" (उनके आगे) शब्द महत्वपूर्ण है; यह दर्शाता है कि सीता राम के पीछे-पीछे चलने वाली भार्या नहीं, बल्कि मार्ग के कष्टों को पहले स्वयं झेलने वाली सहधर्मिणी हैं। वे राम के सुख के लिए वनों के कष्ट सहने को तत्पर थीं। उनकी स्पष्ट घोषणा है कि राम के बिना स्वर्ग का सुख भी उनके लिए व्यर्थ है। यह भारतीय संस्कृति में पत्नी के समर्पण और पति-पत्नी के एकात्म भाव का सर्वोच्च उदाहरण है।
