Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
प्रागेव तु महाभागः सौमित्रिर्मित्रनन्दनः ।
पूर्वजस्यानुयात्रार्थे द्रुमचीररैलङ्कृतः ।
॥५-३३-२९॥
Prāgeva tu mahābhāgaḥ saumitrirmitranandanaḥ । Pūrvajasyānuyātrārthe drumacīrarailaṅkṛtaḥ । ॥5-33-29॥
Translation
Even before that, the illustrious son of Sumitra (Lakshmana), who brings joy to his friends, had adorned himself in bark robes to follow his elder brother.

हमसे भी पहले, महाभाग्यशाली और मित्रों को आनंद देने वाले सुमित्रानंदन (लक्ष्मण), अपने बड़े भाई का अनुगमन करने के लिए वल्कल वस्त्र धारण कर तैयार हो गए थे।
English Commentary
Sita acknowledges Lakshmana’s unparalleled devotion. The phrase prageva (even before) suggests that Lakshmana’s resolve to accompany Rama was instantaneous, perhaps even preceding Sita's own preparations. By describing him as wearing bark robes (druma-cira), she paints a picture of his immediate transformation from a prince to a servant-ascetic. The title Mitranandan (delighter of friends) adds a layer of pathos—he who was the source of joy for the kingdom chose the hardship of the forest solely to serve his elder brother (Purvaja).

यहाँ लक्ष्मण जी के भ्रातृ-प्रेम और त्याग का वर्णन है। सीता जी कहती हैं कि वन जाने की तैयारी में लक्ष्मण उनसे भी आगे थे ("प्रागेव")। जैसे ही उन्हें पता चला कि राम वन जा रहे हैं, उन्होंने तत्काल राजसी वस्त्र त्याग कर "द्रुमचीर" (पेड़ों की छाल/वल्कल) धारण कर लिए। "मित्रनन्दन" विशेषण का प्रयोग यह बताता है कि लक्ष्मण अपने प्रियजनों के लिए आनंद का स्रोत हैं, किन्तु राम की सेवा के लिए उन्होंने अपना सर्वस्व क्षण भर में त्याग दिया। यह लक्ष्मण के अनन्य समर्पण को रेखांकित करता है।
