किमर्थं तव नेत्राभ्यां वारि स्रवति शोकजम् ।
पुण्डरीकपलाशाभ्यां विप्रकीर्णमिवोदकम् ।

Kimarthaṃ tava netrābhyāṃ vāri sravati śokajam । Puṇḍarīkapalāśābhyāṃ viprakīrṇamivodakam । 。 ॥5-33-4॥
Translation
Why does water born of grief flow from your eyes, like water scattered from two lotus petals?
हिंदी अनुवाद
तुम्हारे नेत्रों से यह शोकजनित जल (आँसू) क्यों बह रहा है, जैसे दो कमल-पत्रों से जल झड़ रहा हो?
English Commentary
The imagery here is exquisitely poetic. Comparing Sita’s tear-filled eyes to 'Pundarika-palasha' (white lotus petals) shedding water highlights her delicate nature and untainted beauty even in distress. By asking the cause of her 'Shokajam vari' (water born of grief), Hanuman validates her pain without assuming her story, allowing her the agency to speak first.

हनुमान जी की भाषा अत्यंत काव्यात्मक और संवेदनशील है। वे सीता जी के आंसुओं की तुलना कमल की पंखुड़ियों से गिरने वाले जल से करते हैं। यह उपमा दर्शाती है कि रोते हुए भी सीता जी का सौंदर्य कम नहीं हुआ है। साथ ही, यह प्रश्न 'किमर्थं' (किसलिए) पूछकर वे सीता को अपना दुःख साझा करने के लिए आमंत्रित कर रहे हैं। एक अजनबी द्वारा इतनी संवेदना दिखाना सीता को सोचने पर विवश करता है।
