Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
स्वप्ने ऽपि यद्यहं वीरं राघवं सहलक्ष्मणम् ।
पश्येयं नावसीदेयं स्वप्नो ऽपि मम मत्सरी ।
।
॥५-३४-२१॥
Svapne 'pi yadyahaṃ vīraṃ Rāghavaṃ sahalakṣmaṇam । Paśyeyaṃ nāvasīdeyaṃ svapno 'pi mama matsarī । । ॥5-34-21॥
Translation
If I could see the heroic Raghava along with Lakshmana even in a dream, I would not feel this distress. But even the dream is jealous/envious of me.
हिंदी अनुवाद
यदि मैं स्वप्न में भी लक्ष्मण सहित वीर राघव (राम) को देख पाती, तो मुझे दुख न होता। (किंतु) स्वप्न भी मुझसे ईर्ष्या करता है (अर्थात मुझे नींद ही नहीं आती, तो स्वप्न कैसे दिखे?)।
English Commentary
This verse is profoundly tragic. Sita laments that she is denied even the solace of a subconscious reunion. To see Rama in a dream requires sleep, but grief keeps her perpetually awake. Thus, she personifies "Dream" as being matsari (jealous or hostile) towards her. It underscores that her suffering is continuous, with no respite even in the unconscious state. The inability to escape her reality even for a moment is her greatest torment.
हिंदी टीका
यह सीता की पीड़ा की पराकाष्ठा है। वे कहती हैं कि वास्तविक मिलन तो दूर, उन्हें स्वप्न में भी राम के दर्शन दुर्लभ हो गए हैं। "स्वप्नो ऽपि मम मत्सरी"—स्वप्न भी मेरा बैरी (शत्रु) हो गया है। इसका भाव यह है कि स्वप्न आने के लिए नींद आनी चाहिए, और वियोग के दुख में सीता को नींद ही नहीं आती। इसलिए, वे स्वप्न में भी राम से नहीं मिल पातीं। यह पंक्ति विरह की तीव्रता को बहुत ही मार्मिक ढंग से प्रस्तुत करती है।
