Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
दुन्दुभिस्वननिर्घोषः स्निग्धवर्णः प्रतापवान् ।
समः समविभक्ताङ्गो वर्णं श्यामं समाश्रितः ।

Dundubhisvananirghoṣaḥ snigdhavarṇaḥ pratāpavān |
Samaḥ samavibhaktāṅgo varṇaṃ śyāmaṃ samāśritaḥ ॥5-35-16॥
Translation
His voice is deep and resonant like the sound of a kettledrum. He has glossy skin and is full of splendour. His body is symmetrical, his limbs are well-proportioned, and he possesses a dark (Shyama) complexion.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उनका स्वर दुन्दुभी (नगाड़े) की ध्वनि के समान गंभीर है। उनकी त्वचा कांतिमान (स्निग्ध) है और वे अत्यंत प्रतापी हैं। उनका शरीर सुडौल है, अंग समान रूप से विभक्त हैं और उनका वर्ण श्याम (सांवला) है।
English Commentary
This verse continues the physiognomic description. A voice like a Dundubhi (kettledrum) implies depth, resonance, and authority, traits of a natural leader. Snigdhavarna (glossy/shining skin) indicates inner health and vitality despite the hardships of forest life. Samavibhaktango suggests perfect anatomical symmetry and proportion, defining physical beauty in the classical Indian context. The mention of his Shyama (dark/cerulean) complexion serves as a definitive visual identifier for Sita, visualizing the husband she misses.

राम का स्वर 'दुन्दुभी' जैसा गहरा और गूँजने वाला है, जो एक चक्रवर्ती सम्राट का लक्षण है; यह स्वर भयभीत को अभय और शत्रु को भय देता है। 'स्निग्धवर्ण' का अर्थ है कि वनवास के कष्टों के बावजूद उनकी त्वचा की चमक फीकी नहीं पड़ी है, वे अब भी 'प्रतापवान' हैं। 'समविभक्ताङ्गो' का अर्थ है कि उनका शरीर न तो बहुत लंबा है, न छोटा, न मोटा, न पतला—वह पूर्णतः संतुलित है। अंत में 'वर्णं श्यामं' कहकर हनुमान जी उस छवि को पुष्ट करते हैं जो सीता के हृदय में बसी है।
