ऋश्यमूकस्य पृष्ठे तु बहुपादपसङ्कुले ।
भ्रातुर्भयार्तमासीनं सुग्रीवं प्रियदर्शनम् ।

Ṛśyamūkasya pṛṣṭhe tu bahupādapasaṅkule |
bhrāturbhayārtamāsīnaṃ sugrīvaṃ priyadarśanam ॥5-35-25॥
Translation
On the plateau of the Rishyamuka mountain, which was dense with many trees, they found the pleasant-looking Sugriva seated, distressed by the fear of his brother.

घने वृक्षों से भरे हुए ऋश्यमूक पर्वत के शिखर पर, अपने भाई (वाली) के भय से दुखी बैठे हुए, फिर भी देखने में प्रिय लगने वाले सुग्रीव को उन्होंने देखा।
English Commentary
Hanuman details the location and state of Sugriva. He was hiding on the Rishyamuka mountain, specifically described as dense with trees (bahupādapasaṅkule), implying a secure hiding spot. Hanuman uses two contrasting descriptions for Sugriva: he was terrified of his brother (bhayāratam) yet appeared pleasant and noble (priyadarśanam). This distinction is important as it suggests that despite his fugitive status and fear, Sugriva retained a royal and trustworthy aura that made him a suitable ally for Rama. It also highlights the desperate situation Sugriva was in before Rama's arrival.
