विचित्य वनदुर्गाणि गिरिप्रस्रवणानि च ।
अनासाद्य पदं देव्याः प्राणांस्त्यक्तुं समुद्यताः ।

Vicitya vanadurgāṇi giriprasravaṇāni ca |
anāsādya padaṃ devyāḥ prāṇāṃstyaktuṃ samudyatāḥ ॥5-35-59॥
Translation
Having searched the impassable forests and mountain waterfalls, and not finding any trace of the Divine Lady, we were ready to give up our lives.

दुर्गम वनों और पर्वतीय झरनों को छान मारने के बाद भी, जब देवी (सीता) का कोई पता नहीं चला, तब हम प्राण त्यागने को तैयार हो गए।
English Commentary
Hanuman emphasizes the thoroughness of their failed search. They had combed through vanadurgāṇi (fortresses of forests/difficult terrains) and waterfalls, yet found no trace (padam) of Sita. The repetition of their readiness to die (prāṇāṃstyaktuṃ samudyatāḥ) serves to underline the depth of their loyalty and the hopelessness they felt before the breakthrough occurred. It sets the stage for the miraculous encounter with Sampati that would finally lead them to Lanka.

हनुमान जी पुन: दोहराते हैं कि उन्होंने कोई कसर नहीं छोड़ी थी। 'वनदुर्गाणि' (कठिन वन) और 'गिरिप्रस्रवणानि' (पहाड़ी इलाके) खोजने के बाद भी जब 'अनासाद्य' (सफलता/पता नहीं मिला), तो उन्होंने मृत्यु को चुनने का फैसला किया। यह श्लोक उस नाटकीय मोड़ का परिचय देता है जहाँ सम्पाती (जटायु का भाई) दृश्य में आता है। हनुमान जी सीता को यह बता रहे हैं कि वे उन्हें खोजने के लिए मृत्यु के द्वार तक पहुँच चुके थे।
