दृष्ट्वा प्रायोपविष्टांश्च सर्वान् वानरपुङ्गवान् ।
भृशं शोकार्णवे मग्नः पर्यदेवयदङ्गदः ।

Translation
Seeing all the foremost Vanaras seated in Prayopavesha (fasting unto death), Angada, immersed deep in an ocean of grief, began to lament.

सभी वानर श्रेष्ठों को आमरण अनशन (प्रायोपवेश) के लिए बैठे हुए देखकर, शोक के सागर में बुरी तरह डूबे हुए अंगद विलाप करने लगे।
English Commentary
Hanuman recounts to Sita the moment of absolute despair experienced by the search party. The Vanaras, having failed to find Sita within the time limit set by King Sugriva, and fearing his severe punishment, decided to undertake 'Prayopavesha'—a ritual fast unto death. This verse highlights the deep emotional turmoil of Crown Prince Angada. Seeing his loyal and powerful companions resigning themselves to death, he was overwhelmed by an 'ocean of grief' (shokarnava). Angada's lamentation here serves a crucial narrative purpose: it emphasizes the dedication and desperation of the Vanaras. By sharing this intimate detail, Hanuman proves to Sita that he was part of that specific group and witnessed their lowest moment. It validates the immense struggle and the emotional toll the search for her had taken on the Vanara army before they achieved this breakthrough.

हनुमान जी सीता माता को वह वृत्तांत सुना रहे हैं जब वानर दल सीता की खोज में असफल होकर निराश हो गया था। यह श्लोक उस समय की घोर निराशा का चित्रण करता है जब दक्षिण दिशा में गए वानरों को निर्धारित अवधि बीत जाने पर भी सीता जी का पता नहीं चला था। सुग्रीव के दंड के भय से और अपने कर्तव्य को पूरा न कर पाने की ग्लानि से भरकर, अंगद और अन्य प्रमुख वानरों ने 'प्रायोपवेश' का निर्णय लिया था, जो मृत्यु तक अन्न-जल त्यागने का एक प्राचीन व्रत है। युवराज अंगद अपने साथियों की यह दशा और अभियान की असफलता देखकर अत्यंत दुखी थे। यहाँ 'शोकार्णवे मग्नः' (शोक के सागर में डूबे हुए) वाक्यांश अंगद की मानसिक स्थिति की गंभीरता को दर्शाता है। हनुमान जी द्वारा इस घटना का वर्णन सीता जी को यह विश्वास दिलाने के लिए किया जा रहा है कि वानरों ने उन्हें खोजने के लिए अपने प्राणों तक को दांव पर लगा दिया था।
