चारु तद्वदनं तस्यास्ताम्रशुक्लायतेक्षणम् ।
अशोभत विशालाक्ष्या राहुमुक्त इवोडुराट् ।

Cāru tadvadanaṃ tasyāstāmraśuklāyatekṣaṇam । Aśobhata viśālākṣyā rāhumukta ivoḍurāṭ । । ॥5-35-86॥
Translation
Her beautiful face, with large eyes that were coppery (at the corners), white, and elongated, shone like the Moon (King of Stars) released by Rahu.

विशाल नेत्रों वाली सीता का वह सुंदर मुख, जिसके नेत्र लाल (कोनों पर) और श्वेत तथा आयताकार (लम्बे) थे, राहु से मुक्त हुए चन्द्रमा (नक्षत्रराज) की भाँति सुशोभित हुआ।
English Commentary
Valmiki employs a powerful astronomical simile here. Sita’s face is compared to the Moon ('uḍurāṭ' - king of stars) emerging from an eclipse caused by Rahu. Just as the moon is temporarily obscured but not destroyed by the eclipse, Sita’s radiance was veiled by grief but remained intrinsic to her nature. The news from Hanuman acts as the liberation from this 'eclipse.' The detailed description of her eyes—coppery at the edges, white, and long ('āyata')—aligns with the Samudrika Shastra's definition of noble features. This imagery highlights the restoration of hope and life in Sita, transforming her demeanor from despondency to radiant expectation.

महर्षि वाल्मीकि यहाँ एक अत्यंत सुंदर उपमा का प्रयोग करते हैं। सीता जी के मुख की तुलना 'उडुराट्' (नक्षत्रों के राजा, चन्द्रमा) से की गई है। जैसे ग्रहण के समय राहु चन्द्रमा को ग्रस लेता है, वैसे ही शोक ने सीता के मुख की कांति को ढक लिया था। हनुमान जी के वचनों ने उस शोक रूपी राहु को हटा दिया, जिससे उनका मुख पुनः प्रकाशित हो उठा। 'ताम्रशुक्लायतेक्षणम्' उनके नेत्रों के स्वास्थ्य और सौंदर्य का शास्त्रीय वर्णन है—किनारों पर रक्तिम, बीच में श्वेत और कर्णपर्यंत विस्तृत। यह उपमा सीता जी के चरित्र की पवित्रता और शीतलता को भी ध्वनित करती है, जो चन्द्रमा के समान ही आह्लादकारी है।
