हते ऽसुरे संयति शम्बसादने कपिप्रवीरेण महर्षिचोदनात् ।
ततो ऽस्मि वायुप्रभवो हि मैथिलि प्रभावतस्तत्प्रतिमश्च वानरः ।
।
॥५-३५-८९॥
Hate 'sure saṃyati śambasādane Kapipravīreṇa maharṣicodanāt । Tato 'smi vāyuprabhavo hi maithili Prabhāvatastatpratimaśca vānaraḥ । । ॥5-35-89॥
Translation
O Maithili! When the demon Shambasadana was killed in battle by the monkey hero (Kesari) at the instigation of great sages, I was born of the Wind God (Vayu). I am a monkey equal to him (Vayu) in power.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे मैथिली! महर्षियों की प्रेरणा से जब वानर वीरों में श्रेष्ठ (मेरे पिता केसरी) ने युद्ध में 'शम्बसादन' नामक असुर को मार डाला था, (उस क्षेत्र में) मेरा जन्म वायुदेव के अंश से हुआ। मैं प्रभाव (शक्ति) में उन्हीं (वायु) के समान एक वानर हूँ।
English Commentary
Hanuman clarifies his lineage to establish his capability. He identifies himself as the son of Kesari ('Kapipravirena' - the monkey hero), renowned for killing the demon Shambasadana, but explains his divine origin ('Vayuprabhavo' - born of the Wind). In ancient tradition, declaring one's lineage is a formal way to establish credibility and prowess. By stating he is 'tat-pratima' (equal to him, i.e., Vayu) in power, Hanuman assures Sita that although he appears as a mere monkey, he possesses the elemental strength required to cross the ocean and challenge Ravana, thereby validating his claim of being a competent messenger of Rama.

इस श्लोक में हनुमान जी अपनी वंशावली और शक्ति के स्रोत का परिचय देते हैं ताकि सीता जी को उनकी सामर्थ्य पर भरोसा हो। वे बताते हैं कि वे 'क्षेत्रज' पुत्र केसरी के हैं (जिन्होंने शम्बसादन असुर का वध किया था) लेकिन 'औरस' या आध्यात्मिक रूप से वे वायुदेव के पुत्र हैं। 'वायुप्रभवो' का अर्थ है वायु से उत्पन्न। 'प्रभावतस्तत्प्रतिमश्च' (शक्ति में उन्हीं के समान) कहकर वे यह आश्वासन देना चाहते हैं कि वे समुद्र लांघने और राक्षसों से लड़ने में सक्षम हैं। यह परिचय सीता जी के मन में हनुमान की भौतिक क्षमता के प्रति विश्वास उत्पन्न करने के लिए अत्यंत आवश्यक है।
