Kaccinmitrāṇi labhate mitraiścāpyabhigamtyate ।
Kaccit kalyāṇamitraśca mitraiścāpi puraskṛtaḥ ।

Kaccinmitrāṇi labhate mitraiścāpyabhigamtyate । Kaccit kalyāṇamitraśca mitraiścāpi puraskṛtaḥ । ॥5-36-18॥
Translation
Does he gain friends? Is he approached by friends? Does he have virtuous friends, and is he honored by his friends?

क्या उन्हें मित्र प्राप्त होते हैं? क्या मित्र उनके पास स्वयं आते हैं? क्या वे कल्याणकारी (सच्चे) मित्रों वाले हैं और क्या मित्रों द्वारा सम्मानित होते हैं?
English Commentary
Recognizing the strategic necessity of allies in war, Sita inquires about Rama's diplomatic standing. She asks four things: 1) Does he actively acquire friends (labhate)? 2) Do friends seek him out (abhigamyate)? 3) Are his friends virtuous and helpful (kalyāṇamitra)? 4) Is he respected/honored by these friends (puraskṛtaḥ)? This shows Sita's concern that Rama, in his exile and grief, might be isolated or disrespected. She knows that to defeat Ravana, Rama needs a loyal and honoured coalition.

वनवास में और रावण जैसे शत्रु के विरुद्ध अकेले लड़ना संभव नहीं है। सीता जी जानती हैं कि 'मित्र संग्रह' (alliances) आवश्यक है। वे पूछती हैं कि क्या राम नए मित्र बना रहे हैं ('लभते') और क्या पुराने मित्र उनके पास सहायता के लिए आ रहे हैं ('अभिगम्यते')? 'कल्याणमित्र' का अर्थ है ऐसे मित्र जो विपत्ति में साथ न छोड़ें। सीता यह सुनिश्चित करना चाहती हैं कि सुग्रीव और विभीषण जैसे मित्र राम का सम्मान ('पुरस्कृतः') करते हैं और उनकी आज्ञा मानते हैं।
