धर्मापदेशात्त्यजतश्च राज्यं मां चाप्यरण्यं नयतः पदातिम ।
नासीद्व्यथा यस्य न भीर्न शोकः कच्चिच्च धैर्यं हृदये करोति ।
॥५-३६-२९॥
Dharmāpadeśāttyajataśca rājyaṃ māṃ cāpyaraṇyaṃ nayataḥ padātim । Nāsīdvyathā yasya na bhīrna śokaḥ kaccicca dhairyaṃ hṛdaye karoti । ॥5-36-29॥
Translation
He who felt no pain, no fear, and no grief when leaving the kingdom for the sake of Dharma and leading me on foot to the forest—does he still hold courage in his heart?

धर्म के कारण (धर्मापदेशात्) राज्य त्यागते समय और मुझे पैदल वन में ले जाते समय जिन्हें न कोई व्यथा हुई, न भय और न शोक—क्या वे अब भी अपने हृदय में वैसा ही धैर्य धारण करते हैं?
English Commentary
Sita draws a parallel between the start of their exile and the present crisis. She recalls Rama's stoicism when he renounced the kingdom for Dharma and walked to the forest without vyathā (pain), bhī (fear), or śoka (grief). She wonders if he maintains that same dhairyam (fortitude/patience) now. The subtle implication is that losing a kingdom is bearable for a man of Dharma, but losing his wife might break his resolve in a way political loss could not. She prays his inner strength remains intact.

सीता जी राम के अतीत के व्यवहार से वर्तमान की तुलना कर रही हैं। जब वनवास हुआ था, राम स्थितप्रज्ञ थे—उन्हें राज्य जाने का दुख नहीं था। सीता जी सोच रही हैं कि क्या वह 'धैर्य' अब भी कायम है? वनवास 'धर्म' के लिए था, इसलिए सह लिया, पर सीता का हरण 'अधर्म' है। क्या इस नई और क्रूर परिस्थिति में राम का वह प्रसिद्ध संयम और साहस अटूट है? यह राम के चरित्र की अग्निपरीक्षा के समान प्रश्न है।
