न मांसं राघवो भुङ्क्ते न चापि मधु सेवते ।
वन्यं सुविहितं नित्यं भक्तमश्नाति पञ्चमम् ।
।
॥५-३६-४१॥
Na māṃsaṃ rāghavo bhuṅkte na cāpi madhu sevate । Vanyaṃ suvihitaṃ nityaṃ bhaktamaśnāti pañcamam । । ॥5-36-41॥
Translation
Raghava does not eat meat, nor does he partake of honey (or wine). Everyday, he eats only wild food, ritually Prepared, at the fifth watch (evening).
हिंदी अनुवाद
(आपके वियोग में) राघव न तो मांस खाते हैं और न ही मधु (मदिरा/शहद) का सेवन करते हैं। वे नित्य केवल वन में मिलने वाला पवित्र (सुविहितं) भोजन (कंद-मूल आदि) शाम के समय (पञ्चमम्) करते हैं।
English Commentary
This verse underscores Rama's asceticism born of grief. Although a Kshatriya in the forest might typically consume game, Hanuman clarifies: Na māṃsaṃ... bhuṅkte (He does not eat meat) nor madhu (honey/wine). He subsists on vanyam (wild forest produce) that is suvihitam (pure/well-gathered). Eating at the pañcamam (the fifth period of the day, i.e., evening) implies fasting throughout the day. This physical austerity mirrors his emotional dedication to Sita; he refuses pleasures while she suffers.

यह श्लोक राम के संयम और विरह-व्रत का वर्णन करता है। क्षत्रिय होने के नाते वन में मांस और मधु (या मदिरा) का सेवन वर्जित नहीं था, परन्तु सीता के वियोग में राम ने इन तामसिक और राजसिक वस्तुओं का त्याग कर दिया है। 'पञ्चमम्' (दिन का पांचवां भाग, अर्थात सायं काल) भोजन करना यह दर्शाता है कि वे दिन भर आपकी खोज या तपस्या में लीन रहते हैं और केवल जीवन रक्षा मात्र के लिए एक समय भोजन करते हैं। यह राम की सात्विक तपस्या का चित्रण है।
