Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अनिद्रः सततं रामः सुप्तो ऽपि च नरोत्तमः ।
सीतेति मधुरां वाणीं व्याहरन् प्रतिबुद्ध्यते ।
।
॥५-३६-४४॥
Anidraḥ satataṃ rāmaḥ supto 'pi ca narottamaḥ । Sīteti madhurāṃ vāṇīṃ vyāharan pratibuddhyate । । ॥5-36-44॥
Translation
Rama, the best among men, remains constantly sleepless. Even if he falls asleep, he wakes up uttering the sweet words 'Oh Sita!'.
हिंदी अनुवाद
नरोत्तम श्री राम सदा निद्राहीन रहते हैं। यदि कभी उन्हें नींद आ भी जाए, तो वे 'सीते!'—ऐसे मधुर वचन बोलते हुए तत्काल जाग उठते हैं।
English Commentary
This verse portrays the depth of Rama's psychological distress caused by separation. Sleeplessness (anidra) is a classic symptom of intense grief in Sanskrit poetics. Hanuman emphasizes that Sita permeates not just Rama's waking thoughts, but his subconscious state as well. Even when exhausted nature forces him to sleep, his mind remains fixed on her, causing him to cry out her name and wake up abruptly. This highlights that for Rama, there is no respite from the pain of separation, neither in the waking world nor in the dream state.

यह श्लोक वियोग की चरम सीमा को दर्शाता है जहाँ शारीरिक आवश्यकताएँ (जैसे निद्रा) भी गौण हो जाती हैं। 'अनिद्रः' शब्द बताता है कि मानसिक संताप के कारण उन्हें चैन नहीं मिलता। यदि शरीर थककर सो भी जाता है, तो अवचेतन मन में केवल सीता का ही वास रहता है। स्वप्न में सीता का दर्शन होते ही या उनका नाम पुकारते ही वे चौंककर जाग जाते हैं, और वास्तविकता की शून्यता उन्हें पुनः घेर लेती है। 'नरोत्तम' विशेषण का प्रयोग यह बताने के लिए किया गया है कि इतने महान धैर्यवान पुरुष की भी यह दशा केवल असाधारण प्रेम के कारण है।
