Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
स तस्मात् पादपाद्धीमानाप्लुत्य प्लवगर्षभः ।
ततो वर्धितुमारेभे सीताप्रत्ययकारणात् ।
।
॥५-३७-३३॥
Sa tasmāt pādapāddhīmānāplutya plavagarṣabhaḥ । Tato vardhitumārebhe sītāpratyayakāraṇāt । । ॥5-37-33॥
Translation
Then, that intelligent, foremost among monkeys jumped down from that tree and began to expand his body to generate confidence in Sita.

तब उन बुद्धिमान वानरश्रेष्ठ ने उस वृक्ष से नीचे कूदकर, सीता जी के मन में विश्वास उत्पन्न करने के लिए, अपने शरीर को बढ़ाना आरम्भ किया।
English Commentary
Hanuman is described as 'dhiman' (wise/intelligent). He thoughtfully jumped down from the tree before expanding, likely to avoid breaking the branches and causing a disturbance that might alert the guards. The phrase 'Sita-pratyaya-karanat' (for the sake of causing belief/confidence in Sita) underscores his motivation. This display of power was not born of ego but was a pragmatic necessity. It highlights Hanuman’s psychological acumen; he understood that Sita needed visual proof of his capability to overcome her skepticism about his small stature.
