Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
दारयन् स च मां काकस्तत्रैव परिलीयते ।
न चाप्युपारमन्मांसाद्भक्षार्थी बलिभोजनः ।
।
॥५-३८-१६॥
dārayan sa ca māṃ kākastatraiva parilīyate । na cāpyupāramanmāṃsādbhakṣārthī balibhojanaḥ । । ॥5-38-16॥
Translation
"That crow would peck at me and hide right there. That eater of oblations (crow), desiring flesh, would not desist."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"वह कौआ मुझे नोचता और वहीं (आसपास) छिप जाता। वह 'बलिभोजन' (कौआ) मांस खाने की इच्छा से बाज नहीं आ रहा था (रुक नहीं रहा था)।"
English Commentary
This verse describes the audacity and persistence of the crow. The term 'balibhojanah' is a kenning for a crow (one who eats religious offerings/oblations), but here it carries a touch of irony—a bird meant to eat sacred food is craving living flesh. The phrase 'tatraiva pariliyate' (hiding right there) indicates that this was no ordinary bird; it was cunning and deliberate in its harassment. The verse captures the mounting irritation and distress Sita felt, as the bird was relentless in its attacks, refusing to leave despite her efforts to shoo it away.

यहाँ कौवे की धृष्टता और हठ का वर्णन है। 'बलिभोजन' शब्द का प्रयोग संस्कृत में कौवे के लिए किया जाता है क्योंकि वे बलि (धार्मिक अन्न) खाते हैं, लेकिन यहाँ यह व्यंग्यात्मक है कि पवित्र अन्न खाने वाला पक्षी जीवित मनुष्य का मांस खाना चाहता है। 'तत्रैव परिलीयते' (वहीं छिप जाता है) दिखाता है कि वह कौआ साधारण नहीं था; वह चालाक था और सीता जी को तंग करने की योजना बना रहा था। यह श्लोक उस झुंझलाहट को दर्शाता है जो सीता जी महसूस कर रही थीं, क्योंकि वह पक्षी बार-बार आक्रमण कर रहा था और जा नहीं रहा था।
