सुग्रीवो वापि तेजस्वी हरयो ऽपि समागताः ।
इत्युक्तवति तस्मिंश्च सीता सुरसुतोपमा ।
उवाच सोकसन्तप्ता हनुमन्तं प्लवङ्गमम् ।

॥५-३८-५५॥
sugrīvo vāpi tejasvī harayo 'pi samāgatāḥ । ityuktavati tasmiṃśca sītā surasutopamā । uvāca śokasantaptā hanumantaṃ plavaṅgamam । । ॥5-38-55॥
Translation
"And also (what is to be said to) the radiant Sugriva and the gathered monkeys?" When he had spoken thus, Sita, resembling a daughter of the gods, though tormented by grief, spoke to the monkey Hanuman.
हिंदी अनुवाद
और तेजस्वी सुग्रीव तथा अन्य जो वानर साथ आए हैं (उनसे क्या कहना है?)। हनुमान के ऐसा कहने पर, देवताओं की पुत्री के समान (सुंदर) सीता ने, जो शोक से संतप्त थीं, वानर हनुमान से कहा।
English Commentary
Hanuman ensures protocol is followed by asking if there is a message for King Sugriva and his army, establishing that Rama has powerful allies. The narrator describes Sita as Surasutopamā (resembling a daughter of a god), highlighting her innate grace which persists despite her being Śokasantaptā (tormented by grief). This sets the stage for her reply, which is expected to be dignified and profound, befitting her noble stature.

हनुमान सुग्रीव और अन्य वानरों को भी सन्देश प्राप्तकर्ताओं की सूची में जोड़ते हैं, यह दर्शाने के लिए कि पूरी वानर सेना उनके साथ है। वाल्मीकि जी सीता की स्थिति का वर्णन करते हैं—वे 'सुरसुतोपमा' (देवकन्या जैसी) हैं, लेकिन 'शोकसन्तप्ता' (दुःख से जल रही) हैं। यह विरोधाभास उनकी त्रासदी को गहरा करता है—इतनी दिव्यता और इतना कष्ट। अब सीता अपना सन्देश देना आरंभ करती हैं।
