Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
आनुकूल्येन धर्मात्मा त्यक्त्वा सुखमनुत्तमम् ।
अनुगच्छति काकुत्स्थं भ्रातरं पालयन् वने ।
।
॥५-३८-५९॥
ānukūlyena dharmātmā tyaktvā sukhamanuttamam । anugacchati kākutsthaṃ bhrātaraṃ pālayan vane । ॥5-38-59॥
Translation
That righteous soul, acting agreeably, abandoned unsurpassed happiness and follows Kakutstha (Rama), protecting/serving his brother in the forest.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वह धर्मात्मा (लक्ष्मण) अनुकूल भाव से, सर्वोत्तम सुख का त्याग करके, वन में अपने भाई काकुत्स्थ (राम) की रक्षा (सेवा) करते हुए उनके पीछे चलते हैं।
English Commentary
Sita calls Lakshmana Dharmātmā (righteous soul). She highlights that he gave up "unsurpassed happiness" (sukham anuttamam) to accompany them. Interestingly, she uses the word pālayan (protecting/guarding) to describe Lakshmana's role towards Rama. Even though Rama is the mighty warrior, in the forest, it is Lakshmana who stands guard and serves. This acknowledges the physical and service-oriented burden Lakshmana carries for his brother.

सीता लक्ष्मण को 'धर्मात्मा' कहती हैं। वे कहती हैं कि लक्ष्मण ने 'अनुत्तम सुख' (जिससे बढ़कर कोई सुख न हो) का त्याग किया है। सबसे महत्वपूर्ण शब्द है 'पाल्यन्' (रक्षा करते हुए/पालन करते हुए)। यद्यपि राम बड़े भाई हैं, सीता मानती हैं कि वन में लक्ष्मण ही राम के रक्षक और सेवक हैं। लक्ष्मण का व्यवहार हमेशा 'आनुकूल्येन' (अनुकूल/agreeable) रहता है, वे कभी राम की इच्छा के विरुद्ध नहीं जाते।
