राजमार्गं समावृत्य स्थितं रक्षोबलं महत् ।
ददर्श मध्यमे गुल्मे राक्षसस्य चरान् बहून् ॥ ॥५-४-१४॥
Rājamārgaṃ samāvṛtya sthitaṃ rakṣobalaṃ mahat । Dadarśa madhyame gulme rākṣasasya carān bahūn ॥ ॥5-4-14॥
Translation
He saw a great army of Rakshasas stationed covering the royal highway. And in the central outpost (Gulma), he saw many spies/guards of the Rakshasa King.

उन्होंने देखा कि एक विशाल राक्षस सेना राजमार्ग को घेरकर खड़ी है। और, (सेना के) बीच वाले पड़ाव (गुल्म) में रावण के बहुत से गुप्तचरों/सैनिकों को देखा।
English Commentary
Hanuman now encounters the military apparatus of Lanka. A massive force (Rakshabalam mahat) is blocking or guarding the main highway (Rajamarga). The term Gulma is a specific military formation or outpost mentioned in ancient Indian warfare manuals. The presence of numerous Charan (spies or scouts) in the central cluster indicates a high-security zone, likely near the palace or strategic intersections. This verse shifts the tone from the sensory richness of the city to the stark reality of it being a police state under heavy surveillance. Hanuman must now navigate not just architecture, but active regiments.

अब हनुमान जी का ध्यान नागरिक जीवन से हटकर सैन्य सुरक्षा की ओर जाता है। 'रक्षोबलं महत्' (विशाल राक्षस सेना) ने मुख्य राजमार्ग को रोक रखा है। यह रात्रि कालीन गश्त (Night Patrol) का दृश्य है। 'मध्यमे गुल्मे' एक सैन्य तकनीकी शब्द है, जिसका अर्थ है सेना की टुकड़ी या चौकी जो केंद्र में स्थित हो। वहाँ रावण के 'चरान्' (गुप्तचर या विशेष अंगरक्षक) तैनात थे। यह दर्शाता है कि लंका में प्रवेश आसान हो सकता है, लेकिन उसके भीतर घूमना अत्यंत कठिन है। रावण अपनी सुरक्षा को लेकर कितना सतर्क था, यह इस भारी पहरे से पता चलता है। हनुमान जी को इन सुरक्षा चक्रों से बचकर निकलना है।
