Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
दीक्षितान् जटिलान् मुण्डान् गोजिनाम्बरवाससः ।
दर्भमुष्टिप्रहरणान् अग्निकुण्डायुधांस्तथा ॥ ॥५-४-१५॥
Dīkṣitān jaṭilān muṇḍān gojināmbaravāsasaḥ । Darbhamuṣṭipraharaṇān agnikuṇḍāyudhāṃstathā ॥ ॥5-4-15॥
Translation
He saw some who were initiates (Dikshitas), some with matted hair, some with shaven heads, and some wearing cow-hides and skins as clothes. Some used handfuls of Darbha grass as weapons, and others used fire-pits as weapons.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(हनुमान जी ने देखा) कुछ राक्षस दीक्षित थे, कुछ जटाधारी थे, कुछ मुंडे हुए सिर वाले थे। कुछ ने गाय और मृग की खाल के वस्त्र पहने थे। कुछ (हाथों में) कुशा (दर्भ) की मुट्ठी को ही हथियार बनाए हुए थे और कुछ हवन-कुण्डों को ही आयुध (की तरह प्रयोग करने वाले) थे।
English Commentary
Here, Valmiki describes the irregulars or the spiritual corps of Ravana’s army. These are not standard infantry but warrior-ascetics. Their appearance—matted hair (Jatilan), shaven heads (Mundan), wearing skins (Gojinambara)—mimics human rishis, but their intent is malicious. The mention of using handfuls of Darbha grass as weapons suggests they possessed magical powers (Mantras) to turn innocuous objects into missiles. Using Agni-kunda (fire pits) as weapons could imply they carried portable fire for mystical warfare or arson. This imagery emphasizes that Lanka defends itself with dark magic and perverted spirituality as much as with physical steel.

यह श्लोक राक्षसों की विचित्र और भयानक प्रकृति का वर्णन करता है। वे केवल तलवार-धनुष वाले सैनिक नहीं थे, बल्कि 'दीक्षित' (यज्ञ का संकल्प लिए हुए) और तांत्रिक योद्धा भी थे। 'दर्भमुष्टिप्रहरणान्' (कुशा घास को हथियार बनाने वाले) का अर्थ है कि वे अपनी मंत्र शक्ति से घास के तिनके को भी ब्रह्मास्त्र जैसा घातक बना सकते थे (अभिचार कर्म)। 'अग्निकुण्डायुधांस्तथा' (अग्निकुंड को हथियार बनाने वाले) संभवतः उन तांत्रिकों की ओर संकेत है जो आग का प्रयोग युद्ध में करते थे। जटाधारी और मुंडन किए हुए—ये वेशभूषाएं साधुओं की हैं, लेकिन यहाँ वे क्रूर रक्षकों की हैं। यह धर्म का विकृत रूप है—साधु वेश में हिंसक सैनिक। यह हनुमान जी के लिए एक चेतावनी है कि शत्रु मायावी और सिद्ध है।
