परिघ उत्तम हस्तामः च विचित्र कवच उज्ज्वलान् ।
नातिस्थूलान् नातिकृशान् नातिदीर्घ अतिह्रस्वकान् ॥५-४-१८॥
parigha uttama hastāṃś ca vicitra kavaca ujjvalān |
nātisthūlān nātikṛśān nātidīrgha atihrasvakān ॥5-4-18॥
Translation
Hanuman saw those Rakshasas carrying excellent iron clubs in their hands and shining with strange and wonderful armor. They were neither too obese nor too emaciated, neither too tall nor too short.

हनुमान जी ने उन राक्षसों को देखा जिनके हाथों में उत्तम परिघ (लोहे के मुद्गर) थे और जो विचित्र कवचों से सुशोभित थे। वे न तो बहुत मोटे थे, न बहुत दुबले; न बहुत लम्बे थे और न ही बहुत नाटे।
English Commentary
Here, Maharishi Valmiki provides a detailed description of the military prowess and physical attributes of the Rakshasas. Hanuman is observing the enemy forces with the keen eye of a spy. The description reveals that Ravana's guards were not merely savage beasts but physically fit and combat-ready warriors. The phrase 'neither too obese nor too emaciated' indicates that these soldiers were disciplined, maintaining prime physical condition rather than being lazy or malnourished. The presence of excellent iron bludgeons (Parigha) and unique, shining armor signifies their advanced weaponry and defensive preparedness.
