Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
नातिगौरान्नातिकृष्णान्नातिकुब्जान्न वामनान् ।
विरूपान् बहु रूपामः च सुरूपामः च सुवर्चसः ॥५-४-१९॥
nātigaurānnātikṛṣṇānnātikubjānna vāmanān |
virūpān bahu rūpāṃś ca surūpāṃś ca suvarcasaḥ ॥5-4-19॥
Translation
Those guards were neither too fair nor too dark, neither hunchbacked nor dwarfish. Some were misshapen, some possessed multiple forms, while others were handsome and possessed great radiance.

वे रक्षक न तो बहुत गोरे थे, न बहुत काले; न कूबड़े थे और न ही बौने। उनमें से कुछ विरूप (कुरूप) थे, कुछ बहुरूप वाले थे, तो कुछ सुंदर रूप वाले और महान तेज से संपन्न थे।
English Commentary
This verse highlights the diversity and the illusionary nature (Maya) of the Rakshasas. While demons are often imagined solely as grotesque creatures, Valmiki describes them here as 'suvarcasaḥ' (radiant) and 'surūpān' (handsome) as well. This underscores the uncanny nature of Ravana's army, implying their ability to shapeshift (Kamarupa). There is a striking contrast presented: purely monstrous forms intended to instill fear alongside beautiful, radiant warriors who reflect the opulent power of Ravana. Hanuman observes this wide spectrum, realizing that Lanka houses every conceivable type of demonic power. This description adds a layer of mystery and danger to the atmosphere, suggesting that appearances in Lanka can be deceptive, and the enemy possesses both physical might and magical allure.

यह श्लोक राक्षसी माया और उनकी विविधता को रेखांकित करता है। सामान्यतः राक्षसों की कल्पना केवल भयानक जीवों के रूप में की जाती है, किन्तु वाल्मीकि रामायण में उन्हें 'सुवर्चसः' (तेजस्वी) और 'सुरूपान्' (सुंदर) भी बताया गया है। यह रावण की सेना की विचित्रता को दर्शाता है जहाँ कामरूपी राक्षस अपनी इच्छा से रूप बदल सकते थे। यहाँ विरोधाभास द्रष्टव्य है—जहाँ एक ओर विरूप राक्षस हैं जो शत्रु के मन में भय उत्पन्न करते हैं, वहीं दूसरी ओर सुंदर और तेजस्वी योद्धा भी हैं जो रावण के ऐश्वर्य और शक्ति का प्रदर्शन करते हैं। हनुमान जी इस विविधता को देख रहे हैं, जो यह सिद्ध करता है कि लंका में हर प्रकार की आसुरी शक्ति का समावेश था। यह वर्णन लंका के वातावरण को रहस्यमयी और भय मिश्रित कौतूहल से भर देता है।
