नानावेषसमायुक्तान्यथास्वैरगतान् बहून् ।
तीक्ष्ण शूल धरामः चैव वज्रिणः च महा बलान् ॥५-४-२२॥
nānāveṣasamāyuktānyathāsvairagatān bahūn |
tīkṣṇa śūla dharāṃś caiva vajriṇaḥ ca mahā balān ॥5-4-22॥
Translation
Hanuman saw many mighty Rakshasas dressed in various guises, moving about freely according to their will, carrying sharp spears and thunderbolts.

हनुमान जी ने नाना प्रकार के वेश धारण किए हुए, अपनी इच्छा अनुसार (स्वैर) विचरण करते हुए, तीक्ष्ण शूल और वज्र धारण किए हुए बहुत से महाबली राक्षसों को देखा।
English Commentary
The phrase 'yathāsvairagatān' (moving about at their own will) is historically and contextually significant. It indicates that these elite guards enjoyed a degree of autonomy and freedom within the citadel, signaling their high rank and the trust Ravana placed in them. 'Nānāveṣa' (various guises) reinforces their magical capabilities and expertise in disguise and espionage. The sharp spears and thunderbolts reassert their lethal power. Hanuman, who is himself infiltrating in disguise, observes that he is amidst enemies who are masters of disguise and roam freely. This heightens the tension, as fitting in or remaining unseen becomes more difficult in a place where shifting appearances and free movement of powerful entities are the norm.
