शत साहस्रम् अव्यग्रम् आरक्षम् मध्यमम् कपिः ।
रक्षोधिपतिनिर्दिष्टम् ददर्शान्तःपुराग्रतः ॥५-४-२३॥

rakṣodhipatinirdiṣṭam dadarśāntaḥpurāgrataḥ ॥5-4-23॥
Translation
The monkey (Hanuman) saw a central guard force consisting of a hundred thousand attentive troops stationed in front of the inner apartments, commanded by the Lord of Rakshasas himself.

उस वानर (हनुमान) ने अंतःपुर के आगे, राक्षसाधिपति (रावण) द्वारा निर्दिष्ट, एक लाख (शत साहस्रम्) एकाग्रचित्त (अव्यग्र) रक्षकों की एक मध्यवर्ती सेना देखी।
English Commentary
This verse quantifies the sheer scale of the security surrounding Ravana’s private quarters. A force of 'one hundred thousand' (śata sāhasram) is described as the 'madhyamam' (central or intermediate) guard positioned specifically before the inner apartments (Antahpura). This highlights the immense military resources at Ravana's disposal. The term 'avyagram' (attentive/undistracted) is crucial; these were not casual sentries but elite troops maintaining a state of high alert. Being 'rakṣodhipatinirdiṣṭam' (directed by the Lord of Rakshasas) implies they were handpicked by Ravana, representing the praetorian guard of Lanka. For Hanuman, observing this massive, alert formation underscores the nearly impossible odds he faces in penetrating the inner sanctum unnoticed.

यह श्लोक रावण के महल की सुरक्षा व्यवस्था की विशालता को परिभाषित करता है। 'मध्यमम्' का अर्थ है 'कक्षम' या केंद्रीय सुरक्षा दस्ता। यहाँ सैनिकों की संख्या 'शत साहस्रम्' (एक लाख) बताई गई है, जो केवल अंतःपुर (रनिवास) की रक्षा कर रहे थे। यह रावण की शक्ति और असुरक्षा दोनों को दर्शाता है—इतनी विशाल सेना केवल एक महल की रक्षा के लिए!
