श्रुत्वा तु वचनं तस्य वायुसूनोर्महात्मनः ।
उवाचात्महितं वाक्यं सीता सुरसुतोपमा ।

uvācātmahitaṃ vākyaṃ sītā surasutopamā ॥5-40-1॥
Translation
Having heard the words of the great-souled son of the Wind-god, Sita, resembling a daughter of the celestials, spoke words beneficial to herself.

वायुपुत्र महात्मा हनुमान के उन वचनों को सुनकर, देवकन्या के समान सुन्दरी सीता ने अपने हित के लिए (निम्नलिखित) वचन कहे।
English Commentary
This verse marks a pivotal transition in the narrative where Sita’s trust in Hanuman is solidified. Previously, Hanuman established his credentials as Rama’s messenger by presenting the royal ring. Now, described as surasutopamā (resembling a celestial maiden), Sita regains her agency and speaks words conducive to her own welfare (ātmahitaṃ). This suggests she is preparing to give Hanuman the necessary tokens (Abhijnana) that will facilitate her rescue. The epithet mahātmanaḥ used for Hanuman indicates that she recognizes not just his physical prowess but his noble character and intent. It signifies the shift from her initial skepticism and fear of Ravana’s illusions to a constructive dialogue aimed at reunion with Lord Rama.

यह श्लोक संवाद की एक महत्वपूर्ण कड़ी है जहाँ सीता जी का हनुमान जी पर पूर्ण विश्वास स्थापित हो चुका है। इससे पूर्व हनुमान जी ने राम की अंगूठी देकर सीता जी के मन में व्याप्त संदेह को समाप्त कर दिया था। यहाँ सीता जी को 'सुरसुतोपमा' (देवकन्या के समान) कहा गया है, जो उनकी दिव्य आभा और कष्टों के बीच भी न क्षीण होने वाली गरिमा को दर्शाता है। वे 'आत्महितं वाक्यं' अर्थात अपने हित के वचन कह रही हैं, जिसका तात्पर्य है कि वे अब अपनी मुक्ति और राम से मिलन के लिए आवश्यक सन्देश और अभिज्ञान (निशानी) देने के लिए तत्पर हैं। यहाँ हनुमान जी के लिए 'महात्मनः' शब्द का प्रयोग यह सिद्ध करता है कि सीता जी ने उनके चरित्र की विशालता और शक्ति को पहचान लिया है। यह क्षण निराशा से आशा की ओर संक्रमण का प्रतीक है।
