त्वां दृष्ट्वा प्रियवक्तारं संप्रहृष्यामि वानर ।
अर्धसञ्जातसस्येव वृष्टिं प्राप्य वसुन्धरा ।

tvāṃ dṛṣṭvā priyavaktāraṃ saṃprahiṣyāmi vānara |
ardhasañjātasasyeva vṛṣṭiṃ prāpya vasundharā ॥5-40-2॥
Translation
O Vanara, seeing you who speaks pleasant words, I am overjoyed, just as the earth with half-grown crops rejoices upon receiving rain.

हे वानर! प्रिय वचन बोलने वाले तुमको देखकर मैं उसी प्रकार हर्षित हो रही हूँ, जैसे अधपकी (सूखती हुई) खेती वाली धरती वर्षा को पाकर लहलहा उठती है।
English Commentary
Valmiki employs a profound simile here to encapsulate Sita's emotional state. By comparing herself to the earth with "half-grown crops" (ardhasañjātasasya), implies a state of vulnerability and suspended growth, nearing destruction due to drought (despair). Hanuman’s arrival and his sweet words (priyavaktāraṃ) act as the life-sustaining rain that revives the parched earth. This metaphor highlights that Sita was on the brink of existential collapse, yet the news of Rama has revitalized her spirit. It underscores the vital role of the messenger (Duta) not just in logistics but in emotional sustenance. Sita acknowledges Hanuman not merely as a soldier, but as a savior who has ended the drought of silence regarding her husband’s fate.

यहाँ महर्षि वाल्मीकि ने सीता जी की मनःस्थिति का अत्यंत मार्मिक चित्रण एक सुंदर उपमा के माध्यम से किया है। सीता जी अपनी तुलना उस धरती से करती हैं जिसकी फसल अभी पूरी पकी नहीं है ('अर्धसञ्जातसस्य') और जल के अभाव में सूखने के कगार पर है। हनुमान जी का आगमन उनके लिए जीवनदायिनी वर्षा के समान है। यह उपमा यह दर्शाती है कि सीता जी का जीवन निराशा रूपी सूखे से मुरझा रहा था, किन्तु राम के समाचार ने उनमें पुनः प्राण फूँक दिए हैं। 'प्रियवक्तारं' कहकर वे हनुमान जी के प्रति कृतज्ञता व्यक्त करती हैं कि उन्होंने राम का कुशल समाचार सुनाकर उन्हें घोर विषाद से बाहर निकाला है। यह श्लोक वियोग श्रृंगार में आशा के संचार का उत्कृष्ट उदाहरण है।
