धारयिष्यामि मासं तु जीवितं शत्रुसूदन ।
मासादूर्ध्वं न जीविष्ये त्वया हीना नृपात्मज ।

dhārayiṣyāmi māsaṃ tu jīvitaṃ śatrusūdana |
māsādūrdhvaṃ na jīviṣye tvayā hīnā nṛpātmaja ॥5-40-10॥
Translation
O slayer of enemies, O prince, I shall sustain my life for only one month. Beyond one month, I shall not live without you.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे शत्रुओं का नाश करने वाले (शत्रुसूदन)! हे राजकुमार! मैं केवल एक मास तक ही प्राण धारण करूँगी। एक महीने के बाद मैं तुम्हारे बिना जीवित नहीं रहूँगी।
English Commentary
Sita sets a definitive temporal bound to her endurance: one month. This refers to the deadline given by Ravana for her to accept him or face death. By addressing Rama as śatrusūdana (slayer of foes), she invokes his warrior nature to destroy the enemy before this time elapses. The phrase tvayā hīnā (bereft of you) coupled with the deadline emphasizes that her death is certain if he does not arrive. This verse transforms the rescue mission into a time-critical operation, heightening the urgency for Hanuman and subsequently for Rama.

यहाँ सीता जी रावण द्वारा दी गई समय सीमा (अवधि) का उल्लेख करती हैं। रावण ने उन्हें दो मास का समय दिया था, जिसमें से एक मास व्यतीत हो चुका है (या अब केवल एक मास शेष है)। वे राम को 'शत्रुसूदन' (शत्रुघ्न नहीं, बल्कि शत्रुओं का नाश करने वाला विशेषण) कहकर संबोधित करती हैं, यह याद दिलाने के लिए कि उन्हें अपने शत्रु (रावण) का नाश करना है। यह एक स्पष्ट 'अल्टीमेटम' है। हनुमान को यह सन्देश राम तक पहुँचाना है कि उनके पास सैन्य अभियान के लिए केवल एक महीने का समय है। यह श्लोक कथा में 'सस्पेंस' और गतिशीलता लाता है।
