असह्यानि न दुःखानि वाचश्च हृदयच्छिदः ।
राक्षसीनां सुघोराणां त्वत्कृते मर्षयाम्यहम् ।

asahyāni na duḥkhāni vācaśca hṛdayacchidaḥ |
rākṣasīnāṃ sughorāṇāṃ tvatkṛte marṣayāmyaham ॥5-40-9॥
Translation
I am enduring these unbearable sorrows and the heart-piercing words of the terrible Rakshasis only for your sake.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मैं भयानक राक्षसियों के असह्य दुखों और हृदय को विदीर्ण करने वाले वचनों को केवल तुम्हारे (राम के) लिए ही सहन कर रही हूँ।
English Commentary
Sita elucidates the motivation behind her endurance. The physical and psychological torture inflicted by the Rakshasis is described as hṛdayacchidaḥ (heart-piercing) and unbearable. Yet, she asserts marṣayāmyaham (I endure/forgive it) solely tvatkṛte (for your sake). This aligns with the Dharmic ideal where her life is tied to her husband's honor. If she were to yield to death, Rama would be denied the opportunity to rescue her and establish his valor. Her survival is an act of loyalty, preserving herself so that Rama may fulfill his duty as a protector and husband.

यह श्लोक पतिव्रता धर्म की पराकाष्ठा है। सीता जी स्पष्ट करती हैं कि वे मृत्यु से नहीं डरतीं और न ही उन्हें जीवन का मोह है। वे जो 'असह्यानि दुःखानि' (न सहे जाने योग्य दुःख) और राक्षसियों के 'हृदयच्छिदः' (हृदय को छलनी करने वाले) कटु वचन सह रही हैं, उसका एकमात्र कारण 'त्वत्कृते' (तुम्हारे लिए) है। उन्हें आशा है कि राम आएँगे और उनका पौरुष कलंकित नहीं होगा। यदि सीता आत्महत्या कर लेतीं, तो राम को उन्हें बचाने का अवसर न मिलता और रघुकुल की कीर्ति धूमिल हो जाती। इसलिए, उनका जीवित रहना राम के सम्मान की रक्षा के लिए है।
