मनःशिलायास्तिलको गण्डपार्श्वे निवेशितः ।
त्वया प्रनष्टे तिलके तं किल स्मर्तुमर्हसि ।

manaḥśilāyāstilako gaṇḍapārśve niveśitaḥ |
tvayā pranaṣṭe tilake taṃ kila smartumarhasi ॥5-40-5॥
Translation
Remind him: "When my tilaka had faded, you applied a mark with red arsenic (manahshila) on my cheek. You surely ought to remember that."
हिंदी अनुवाद
(उन्हें स्मरण कराना कि) जब मेरे माथे का तिलक मिट गया था, तब आपने मेरे गाल (कपोल) के पास मनशिल (लाल पत्थर/गैरिक) से तिलक लगाया था। क्या आपको वह याद है?
English Commentary
This verse evokes a deeply personal and romantic memory from their time in the forest. Sita recalls an intimate moment where her forehead mark (tilaka) had faded, and Rama playfully and lovingly reapplied it using manaḥśilā (red arsenic/ochre) found in the rocks. By asking Hanuman to relay this, Sita offers irrefutable proof of identity, as this details a moment witnessed by no one else. The phrase smartumarhasi (you ought to remember) carries emotional weight; it is a plea for him to reconnect with the tenderness of their past to fuel the resolve needed for her rescue. It contrasts the loving touch of Rama with her current desolate state under the gaze of Rakshasas.
